Plaid patterns are formed basically by horizontal and
vertical lines. Architecture designer Mackintosh often
used horizontal and vertical structure to state weight
and support. Nowadays, with the widely use of cast
iron and glass, buildings have a structure of plaid

patterns.

boddies, Theiy have a very dynamic shapes and movements.
I have collected insect spicimens for years. I liked to put my insects on the war which formed a wallpaper of specimens. Beautiful insects might be the right source for pattern making.

Inspiration source

When I was reading a book about weaving techniques, I saw a picture of colorful fibers under the process of weaving.
The sky blue, the sunset orange, the lemon yellow reminds me the sea in the sunset.
An antique Chinese poem came up to me:“The autumn river shares a scenic hue with thevast sky.”I thought maybe I can look at the sunset for
inspiration.

The cosmetics color palette

I used to live with a friend of mine who was a makeup artist. It was joyful to watch her cutting the artificial eyelashes into new shapes, drawing with cosmetics, harmonizing color for his new look.


When the cosmetics box was opened, colors spilled out. The box of magic carried the colors of art.

The cosmetic palette is rich in colors. the different fomulars of cosmetics-powder, cream and glaze have a totally differnt effect,which reminds me the colorways of a color palette. The comsmetic palette itselft looks like a color
palette, so I decided to take color directly from it.

Flowers

People love flowers for its colors, its fragrance, and it's shapes.

Designers also appreciate them. For thousands of years, people have printed flowers on fabrics. Modern designers also creatively be inspired by flowers.

Designers were inspired by its color, or they simply made creative patterns with flowers. So I decide to be inspired with shapes of flower. I came up with the sketch which represents an
abstract flower which is worn by a girl.

Colors of New York City

New York is a colorful city. Its filled with rich colors, artificial or natural. Artists needs to work
on colors. Modern artists are playing with color lumps. Painters and fashion designers, for example, are doing that.

Prints and colors of fabric are vital to all designs. MoMA must
be a wonderful place to go  for inspiration on
prints.
Wonderful use of colors! Not only the choices of colors, but also how they are interacted with each other, and the techniques used are amazing. After I learned how to paint last year, I began to love colors which I used to hate. I went to MoMA quite often and observed the techniques that different designers used. For example, Jackson Pollock’s painting amazed me by techniques he used to create the art work
“No. 31, 1950.



Techniques should be creative! Inspired by Pollock’s
paintings, I often tried to invented creative techniques
on my painting, and this painting on the right is one
of my favorites that I’ve done with stretched cotton and
watercolor.

Pattern is an important part of design. For example, if we use the different pattern for the same piece of dress, then it will result in totally different effects and looks.
I made an  experiment with a gorgeous painting. You can see how it works on the same pieces of dress.

Bodies and Meditation

Every Wedneysday, I participate in the meditation class at Kagyu Dzamling Kunchab Buddhist Center which is located at 81rd street, upper west side. Meditation is a wonderful experience of imagination and getting  inspired Buddhists believe that one can achieve his or her dreams by meditating. For example, if you want to be empowered by Buddhas, you should imagine a scene that Buddhas are empowering you. And I believe it is also applicable to designers, since designers need a concentrate on his or her imagination, and meditation is a way to train one to totally empty other minds and 100% to concentrate on imagination.

 As a devotional Buddhist, I meditate any time when I think it is needed. I imagine the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, with colorful gowns and shinning bodies, flying above me and empowering me. I empty my mind at that moment. Personally, I thinks this is a good exercise for a designer to get inspired and excellent process of creative thinking.

  The  Buddhist exhibition at Met is also a nice place to go for inspiration from the Buddhist painting and sculpture. The beautiful color used on a painting is beautiful, which I think will be a good application for fashion designers today.

Buddhist art are of great details, vivid colors, and unique style. There are many things we can apply to modern fashion, either in a traditional way or a modern way.


Here is a piece of garment, the details of which is inspired by Buddhist portraits on left.
For example, the shoulder and the belt on the chest is inspired from the portrait
below, and the yellow silk is also inspired by dresses the Buddhas wear in the Buddhist paintings.
